With the Renault Master, the French manufacturer cornered the market in the commercial van sector. When it comes to popularity, a Chaigley bespoke conversion on a Renault Master appears to be one of the highest quality and most popular equine transport solutions around.

Background and history

Chaigley are a leading manufacturer of quality coach-built horseboxes in the UK. They specialise in bespoke built horseboxes as well as vehicles and trailers for the leisure and motor sports sector. Since its formation in 1989, Chaigley has specialised in the manufacture of equestrian vehicles making use of modern materials, offering exceptional strength coupled with weight saving properties and durability.

The Renault Master needs little introduction.

The third generation of Renault’s huge Master van, launched in 2010, was tasked with living up to its name by lording it over LCV rivals in the large van sector. From launch, the headlines were promising. Renault proved able to outgun tough competition in the large van sector far more easily.

The Master has been around in one guise or another since 1980. The first-generation model lasting for 17 years. Its replacement in ’97 stuck around for a mere 13 years. This third generation Master appeared in 2010.

The torquey 2.3 litre dCi engine can haul big weights too – up to 4.5-tonnes, if you’re really piling on the pounds. This diesel unit was used throughout the 2010-2019 period.

The conversion

Our vendor was a Chaigley Main Agent. This was used as a demo vehicle. There are numerous very good images in the Gallery.

Being a bespoke build, there is too much to list. We’ll just run through the main points:

  • 2016 Renault Master LM35 Chaigley Horse Box
  • 2.3 litre Diesel
  • Six speed gearbox
  • Pepper White with black painted details
  • 34,500 genuine miles
  • Travelling all over the country and abroad, it is not unusual for these transporters to have huge mileages of 100k+
  • This very low usage is uncommon
  • The current stall space is for two horses
  • More commonly this vehicle has been used for one horse
  • Quilted faux leather seats with white piping
  • Chaigley embossed headrests
  • Ceiling skylight for ventilation in horse area
  • Colour reverse camera which can be switched over to internally view the horse
  • Horse shower
  • Easy-rinse rubber wall and flooring in horse box section
  • Outside tack locker for saddles and equipment, etc.
  • Sliding tinted windows
  • Sink, hob & mini fridge
  • The table turns into a bed in the rear

Our vendor tells us he services the vehicle annually himself.

As you can see from the Gallery, there is a huge amount of storage along with wood effect cabinets and hanging rails for jackets, etc.

Our view

To be honest, we are not experts in horseboxes. Fortuitously though, our vendor is. He used to be an agent. He tells us if this vehicle were spec’d today, with VAT, you’d be lucky to get change from sixty grand.

This vehicle is reserved forty furlongs from that number. Whoever is first past the finishing post is getting a good bargain.

Happy bidding! Please remember, our auction system has an anti-sniping facility to allow fairness to all bidders. Any bid placed within the last 2 minutes will automatically extend the auction by 2 minutes.

Vehicle Location: Alderwasley, Derbyshire DE56 – it’s the responsibility of the buyer to make collection / transportation arrangements directly with our vendor.

Guide Prices

In a sector, where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’ on a vehicle.   Let’s be honest, everyone knows the broad value of a classic and the ‘market’ decides – but, if you’d like us to provide an estimate that’s fine, just email us and we’ll get back to you.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please

We strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings possible. However, we’re not perfect, and your own analysis is very important, we are here to help and answer any queries you may have.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics. So, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, assume that the vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in their life.

Images and photos Technology continues to improve, but please understand that quality varies. If you would like more images, please ask us and we will contact our vendor for you.

Vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired via an auction site. If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Please read our Terms and Conditions  here and our FAQS  here
