Following numerous delays, the all new XJ40 was finally launched in October 1986 as a replacement for Jaguar’s ageing Series III cars. It boasted all-round independent suspension, power-assisted rack and pinion steering, four-wheel disc brakes and generous levels of sound deadening. It proved to be a credible alternative to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7 Series and was well received by the contemporary UK motoring press.

The newcomer was initially available with a choice of two variants of the straight-six AJ6 powerplant – the 2.9 litre SOHC unit or the 3.6 litre DOHC engine. However, by 1989 Jaguar had been bought by Ford, who changed the engine offerings to a 3.2 litre DOHC unit or a 4.0 litre DOHC one.

The built-to-order XJR variant, which we have here, was a JaguarSport product, born of a partnership between Jaguar and Tom Walkinshaw’s TWR concern. The modifications included: uprated camshafts, superior inlet manifolds and a tweaked ECU; enhanced suspension with unique Bilstein dampers; body-coloured body kit; unique Speedline alloy wheels shod with wider tyres; special interior trim. With 251bhp on tap, the model could sprint to 62mph in 7.7 seconds and top 145mph flat out.

Background

Make no mistake – this is a rare car and one of only 20 such models currently licenced for UK roads with only 262 believed to have left the factory.

At first glance it may look like any other XJ40, but a detailed inspection confirms it to be one of the sought-after high-performance XJR versions built by Jaguar Cars and then uprated by JaguarSport of Bloxham.

It is presented in the pleasing combination of British Racing Green bodywork and green-piped magnolia-coloured leather trim.

Originally owned by Jaguar and used as a company demonstrator it then passed to Zeneca Pharmaceuticals before changing hands a couple of times and eventually being purchased by our vendor racking up just four previous keepers to date, who have clocked up 139,000 miles between them. With a fully stamped book up to 78k and a service within the last year it is running, or do we say purring, as sweet as it ever has.

Exterior

With the XJ40, Jaguar began to place more emphasis on build quality as well as simplification of the XJ’s build process. With 25% fewer body panel pressings required versus the outgoing model, the new process also saved weight, increased the stiffness of the chassis, and reduced cabin noise.

The new platform came with significantly different styling, which was more squared-off and angular than the outgoing Series III. Individual round headlamps were replaced with rectangular units on the higher-specification cars.

As you can see from the images this particular example is not perfect but is a very solid base with the potential to be bought back to a very nice car. Okay, there a few dings and scuffs here and there but spend a little time tidying it up and you will own a very special and rare car that will be the envy of your local car show.

The underneath has been undersealed so is very solid, the wheels could do with a refurb, but it is a very honest and genuine car.

Go have a look in the gallery and make your own mind up.

Interior

Open the driver’s door and you are greeted with acres of sumptuous magnolia leather with green pinstripes and deep thick carpets. The driver’s seat does show some minor wear on the bolster but just look at it, it is beautiful.

Dig out the pdi document and you will see that the options list if very extensive:

  • Air Conditioning
  • Trip Computer
  • Cruise Control
  • Stereo Radio Cassette
  • Electric Sunroof
  • 10-way Electric Seats
  • Electric Windows
  • Electric Photochromic Mirrors
  • Heated Front Screen
  • Twin Airbags
  • Headlamp Power Wash

Jaguars of this era really did deliver when it comes to luxury and these top of the range XJRs were at the pinnacle of that luxury.

Mechanicals

The 1994 Jaguar XJR features a 4.0 litre inline-six engine.

As you would expect it is an absolute beast of an engine that is comfortable cruising along as you head to your next stop or delivering that earth shattering pace to get you there quicker than you can say Jaguar XJR. It really is that good.

Fitted to the auto sports gearbox you genuinely get the best of both worlds. The document pack includes a very well stamped service book and there are a handful of invoices showing that it was serviced less than a year ago.

Our vendor has shared that it runs and drives as you expect and stops just as well. It has also benefitted from a new fuel pump recently.

It really is a blend of elegance and rip-roaring performance that everyone should experience at least once in their life.

Our view

If you know Jaguars, then you definitely know the XJR; a truly stunning mix of performance and luxury that was way out of reach to most people back in the day. Now with a very sensible reserve you have the opportunity to own one of the iconic Jaguars.

With a little love and attention to the exterior you will have what is a very rare and exclusive Jaguar that we expect is only going to go one way in terms of values.

Good luck bidding.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that and, in a sector, where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’ on a vehicle.

Let’s be honest, everyone knows the broad value of a classic and the ‘market’ decides – the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, if you’d like us to provide an estimate that’s fine, just email us and we’ll get back to you.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect, and your own analysis is very important, and we are here to help and answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics. So, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, assume that the vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in their life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology continues to improve, but please understand that image and sound quality varies. If you would like more images, please ask us and we will contact our vendor for you.

Finally, please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired via an auction site. If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.
