Today the Austin Allegro has real cult appeal, popular with enthusiasts who see beyond its tarnished reputation. A regular sight at events such as Festival of the Unexceptional, the Allegro has finally found a following, and deservedly so. Built as successor to the Austin 1100 and 1300, the Allegro was produced from 1973 to 1982.

Finished in Champagne Beige with Paprika cloth interior, TBC 527X has been with our vendor for eight years during which time it has covered less than 1,000 miles. The current recorded mileage is a mere 27,533, which surely has to make it one of the lowest mileage Allegros on the road.

Several MOT certificates are present in the history folder which help to warrant the mileage:

Originally owned by Mrs Alexander of Loughborough who part exchanged her Morris Marina for the Austin Allegro on 4th August 1981. The original bill of sale is included in the history folder along with a copy of the original factory tick sheet. Several invoices for parts, labour and services are also present, along with 16 old MOT certificates and a bundle of spares including tail lenses, headlights, indicators etc.

Our vendor tells us that at some point in its life the Allegro has had a top end full respray with windows out and new seals (old ones in the boot). Recent work completed by the vendor include:

• All 4 hydrolastic spheres changed by Dawn and Ian Kennedy – making the ride feel like new
• Service with brakes, hoses and coolant
• Gear link bushes changed
• Every small imperfection removed by dent man

Take time to study the image gallery and supporting video, you’ll see that the car is in superb condition. Our vendor advises that the Allegro has never been welded and is as good underneath as on top. Under the bonnet the engine bay is clean and the 998cc engine runs well.

The Champagne Beige paintwork still looks nice and fresh, with just a small amount of bubbling on the O/S front wing (see image gallery). Little touches such as the Allegro mudflaps and the lovely chrome hubcaps make such a difference and are the icing on top of an already outstanding 43 year old Austin.

The Paprika interior is just to die for! Pure 80’s at its finest. The seats, door cards, carpet and dash are in super condition, the headlining is a little marked, nothing a bit of elbow grease won’t sort. TBC 527X has clearly been loved, molly coddled and revered by its owners, and rightly so. A super example of British motoring.

Our view

An Austin Allegro in great condition, in the best colour combination, with super low mileage, a nice history file and the factory tick off sheet. Wow.

What we love most about this car is the fact that someone really has cared for it. Back in the day the Allegro was seen as a bit of an oddball, but the owners of TBC 527X saw it’s potential, enjoyed it and preserved it. Ready to be seen and shown, this fabulous Allegro will be the star of every event it attends.
