It’s hard to imagine a car that made a more spectacular debut than the Mustang did in April 1964. Demand was so high that sales outstripped production by 6,000 vehicles by the end of the first day of sales. Its success was assured as one of the fastest-selling cars of all time. Gorgeous American Muscle styling is credited to Gale Halderman, David Ash, and Joe Oros of the Ford design studio, with the distinctive long bonnet and short boot that set the benchmark for the “Pony Car” concept.

This Ford was manufactured with a “C-Code” powertrain layout, offering a ~200BHP 289 cu in engine with a two-barrel carburettor as the base V8, coupled to Ford’s three-speed automatic transmission.

The Mustang comes to the market from almost 18 years ownership, with just one former keeper registered in the UK, having been imported from California in 2006.

  • Imported in 2006
  • Purchased by our vendor in 2006
  • One previous UK owner
  • 84,488 Miles
  • V5 in vendor’s name
  • Always garaged
  • MOT, Tax & ULEZ exempt
  • 2 sets of keys
  • Original owner’s manual
  • Original Title booklet with first US owners Name

Now registered as an historic vehicle it does not currently have an MOT, but we are assured it would pass. A quick glance at the MOT history will show that it has only been driven around 7k miles since being imported. Our vendor shared that he only gets time to drive it on short journeys, mainly to keep the oil flowing and brakes free.

This has led to our vendor having the realisation that he just does not have the time to enjoy it, good news for our lucky winner.

Outside and underside

This 1966 Ford Mustang Notchback has an extended low profile giving it a sleek, aerodynamic look. The front end of the car is dominated by a wide grille, bordered by headlights. The flanks of the Mustang have sweeping lines that emphasise its length and speed. This one is equipped with a proper trunk – that’s a boot to you and me.

The deep red paintwork accentuates every inch of the Mustang and looks lovely against the chrome bumpers, wheels and trim.

Our vendor has shared that it presents very well but does have a couple of small areas that show some slight bubbling or crazing, there is also a little surface rust on the lower area of the passenger door. Lift the boot floor carpet and you will see more surface rust but being a Californian car it is extremely solid.

The chrome wheels, bumpers and trim do have a little pitting from age but check out the images, it doesn’t really detract from what a lovely looking car this is. Considering it is nearly 60 years old it looks fantastic.

Underneath this Mustang is nice and solid with just the usual surface rust on the metal components. Our vendor confirms one of the reasons he purchased it is the fact he could find no welding anywhere on the car.

All in all, a very lovely example of this 1960s icon.

Inside

The Mustang is drop-dead cool on the inside too.  Swathes of velour adorn the seats and door pads. As can be seen from the images the seats are in fantastic condition and we are told they are as comfortable as they look. The door pads are the same and the deep red carpets contrast fantastically with the colour combination. Covered with Mustang logoed mats they also look to be in fantastic condition.

The painted door frames and painted lower section of the dash look original and are worthy of a little tidy up, but the leather covered upper section is free from cracks and fading. The chrome binnacle and switches are looking great with a slight patina that is in keeping with its originality.

Everything works in the car other than the A/C which could just need re-gassing, and the temperature gauge – although an auxiliary one has been fitted subtly under the dash. Even the period Mustang branded radio cassette works.

Check out the image gallery and take a look for yourself; it is utterly American, and utterly lovely.

Mechanicals

Then there is the wonderful Mustang V8 engine. The engine is a 289 (4.7-litre) cubic inch small block V8. Fitted with four-barrel Holly carbs and headers it sounds fantastic out of the stainless-steel exhaust and we are assured that it drives just as well as it sounds. As you would expect from a big American V8 it is just lovely to drive, our vendor confirms it has no issues whatsoever. The drum brakes are original and work as they should plus the suspension does its job without issue.

  • Power steering
  • Quickshift three speed auto transmission
  • Bespoke single exhaust
  • High Performance Taylor leads
  • New suspension bushes
  • Dual servo unit
  • Stainless steel dual exhaust

Summary

It is not essential to be ‘in to’ American muscle cars. As classic car enthusiasts there are just some cars that at some point every enthusiast should own. The Mustang is one of them

Fast, powerful, stylish, and uber cool, it delivers on all counts. The Mustang is an iconic symbol of motoring. The style. The emotion. The sound. Oh, the sound. Go on. You know you want to.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that and, in a sector, where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’ on a vehicle.

Let’s be honest, everyone knows the broad value of a classic and the ‘market’ decides – the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, if you’d like us to provide an estimate that’s fine, just email us and we’ll get back to you.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect, and your own analysis is very important, and we are here to help and answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics. So, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, assume that the vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in their life.

Two final comments on images and photos.
